OUR PHILOSOPHY OF PIANO
TEACHING AND LEARNING
We believe the tenets of piano teaching and learning include: 1) using developmentally appropriate, sequential instruction to introduce students to the fundamentals of music and piano technique; 2) teaching students piano technique, music theory, and the expressive elements of music through positive and meaningful interactions with the pieces they play; and 3) guiding students to develop their minds and ears, as well as their fingers, through activities in sight-reading, ear-training, composing, and listening. We have found that as students engage in the active processes of learning and performance, they become independent, well-informed musicians, leading to a lifelong enjoyment of and appreciation for music.
